Hopefully it won’t happen overnight:).
This is a very annoying and extremely self-confident theory which is still so popular amongst scientists and futurists. What will happen to humanity if one day the sun starts turning into red giant? One billion years from now the sun will ten times brighter which is alone sufficient for the oceans to be evaporated. So the earth becomes uninhabitable. It’s annoying and self-confident because it assumes that humanity will still be there when it starts to become a problem.
In fact, the earth will not be suitable for living half a billion years from now either. Since five percent more heat is enough to make it uninhabitable. But the human race doesn’t really have as much time. We are halfway through the age of animal kingdom, which began five hundred million years, and in that time it will end.
Now I ask, where was the man five hundred million or even fifty million years ago? Even five million years ago, they lived only on trees. Does anyone think that a species that has not even stood the test of time with its two hundred thousand years is still has a half a billion years to think where to move?
In addition, in the past half billion years, there were only five mass extinctions in which ninety percent of the species living at that time had disappeared forever. Every hundred million years there is a mass extinction based on experience.
What makes scientists think that the next mass extinction is no bigger problem than the fact that the sun will be brighter, five times later?
In fact, 99.99% of the species that ever lived went extinct. The average lifespan of a species is no more than two million years, not billion.
Why do they think a human race who is here twenty times less time than an average species is an exception to this rule?
Instead of scientists dwelling on what will be a billion years from now, they should be thinking about what will be a million years from now.
A mass extinction often occurs suddenly, since for even a single flash of a neutron star would sterilize the earth in a fraction of a second. But you do not need to think about such extremism as neutron star or gamma ray, as these are impossible to prevent. It is enough to collide with us a smaller planet.
There is also a good chance that in the next hundred million years there will be a global volcanic activity similar to Siberian basalt, which was responsible for the Permian mass extinction. But the humanity won’t have a chance to last even until the next mass extinction.
The history of all mankind is no more than ten thousand years old. Everything happened during that time. This is the Holocene, the age of modern human. It would take a fleeting six hundred thousand years for man to reach the level of 1 type of civilization. From the point of view of earth history, this is not even time. And that would require humanity to develop at this pace at least, for which there is no guarantee either.
There have been several civilizational collapses in the last two thousand years, proving that developing can be backwards. Humanity has no chance, but it has the power to destroy not only itself but all life on earth. So to think at all about where we could move from the earth would have to reach at least the level of type two civilization. But even one can only be achieved if in the meantime we do not bomb ourselves back to stone age, for that again, there’s no guarantee.
The problem is that humanity would need immeasurable power to leave this planet permanently and terraform another, but it has been proven countless times that they are unable to handle even with a little power. Interestingly even the great planetary scientist, Carl Sagan is aware of this fact.
In my childhood two nuclear superpowers ruled the earth, and the danger of nuclear destruction seemed real. I remeber in the early 1990s, depletion of ozone layer seemed fatal. With the global ban on freon, this has been resolved, but even so, it takes sixty years for the ozone layer to fully recover. These are all man made disasters, and recovering from these consumes times and energy, not to mention the financial crisis, which occur every decades.
In conclusion we have to be the least afraid of what will happen when the sun turns into red giant. It’s not realistic problem for humanity. What we need to fear most is that our own fellow human beings gain unlimited power over us. And that is the trend now.
